The Pearl Divers

I see them, the pearl divers
Drifting towards the oceanbed
With suits jet black, ink black
Slow so they don’t get the bends
“What a poor creature you are” say they in showers of bubbles
“for you can never leave”
“What poor creatures you are” say I
“for you can never stay”
Then, detaching my feet from the barnacles
I
Walk
Away
Cloaked in algae and adorned with anemones
They’ll never find the pearls I hid
Deeper down
What a price they would get!
If only I had lived to sell them
